Presentation of the GDR RIFT
The Interdisciplinary Research Group on the African Great Rift (GDR RIFT) is a CNRS initiative aimed at bringing together researchers to study this globally unique region. It brings together multiple disciplines to better understand the interactions between geological, climatic, ecological, and human dynamics.
An interdisciplinary initiative led by the CNRS
The GDR RIFT is part of an interdisciplinary approach involving the CNRS institutes for Earth & Universe Sciences, Ecology & Environment, and Humanities & Social Sciences.
Its mission is to create a space for collaboration among scientists with diverse expertise, to better understand the complex systems of the African Great Rift.
A dynamic launched in 2021
The GDR RIFT was officially launched in January 2021.
Since its creation, it has established itself as a hub for the French and international scientific communities working on the African Great Rift, encouraging knowledge sharing, synergy, and joint projects.
Four focus areas for exploring the African Great Rift
The GDR structures its work around four main research areas:
- Rift Heritage: promoting, preserving, and passing on natural and cultural heritage.
- System Dynamics: studying change, interactions, and risks.
- Natural Resources: analyzing distribution, usage, and impact.
- Training & Education: strengthening skills, encouraging exchanges, and promoting knowledge.
An international scientific network
Thanks to its many members and partners, the GDR RIFT develops a collaborative approach that goes beyond borders.
Scientific conferences, joint projects, and academic exchanges all contribute to a dynamic research environment focused on East Africa and beyond.
